Endless meetings, employees' disengagement, blame and a lack of trust. These are just a few symptoms of a culture of fear in organizations. As contagious as smallpox used to be, fear can affect individuals, teams and organizations, significantly reducing their innovation and learning ability.

Let's explore how to use agile games to Stop the fear pandemic! We will start this workshop by learning about the symptoms and the detrimental impact of fear on team's ability to learn and innovate. Then we will experiment with a fear reset exercise that can help you and your team to find ways to reset your fears in 4 simple steps. Throughout the workshop will learn about agile games designed to increase empathy, build connections and practice risk taking in a "safe to fail" setting. Whether you are coming from a conservative company or a startup with experimental mindset, you will find a game (or two) suited for your own game-readiness level. We will experiment with games and techniques to undo the “learned helplessness on an individual level and discuss agile practices that are effective in establishing trust and helping teams navigate conflict. You will learn about Helpful Cassandras, Things That Suck and Kill the Project practices and get to play a round of Fear Eradicated game. The game can be used in a retrospective setting with your teams as well as a tool to facilitate culture change discussions at your Agile Coaching community of practice.
Timeline breakdown:
1. Connection/ Intro - 5 min
( Participants will start with a pair-interviews to complete a "puzzle piece" with questions related to psychological safety)
2. Symptoms and impact of fear - 10 min
Review fear symptoms in the organization and how they can be traced to the "fight-flight-or-freeze" fear response of our brains. Review Ron Westrum's culture model as it applies to the crippling effect of fear on the information flow.
3. Fear rest worksheet with example - 5 min
Participants will experiment framing one of the sample fear and resetting it using the worksheet provided in this workshop.
4. Psychological Safety Enhancers - 10 min
Introduce agile games and various practices (with examples from the real teams) that are effective in increasing safety: practice speaking about feelings, creating team norms, personal maps, measuring psychological safety, having focused retrospectives etc.
5. Fear eradicated game - 20 min
The game will bring together all the concepts covered in this workshop for a round of table discussions/matching game using the fear cards and safety enhancer cards. Debriefing and conclusion will be included in this final part.
